Thanks to everyone who participated in the first-ever Family Literacy Day World Record Attempt!

More than 119,000 Canadians were documented participating in the Family Literacy Day World Record Attempt to break the Guinness World Record for “Most Children Reading With an Adult, Multiple Locations.” While Canada succeeded in surpassing the original U.S. record of 78,791 participants, Guinness officials recently notified ABC CANADA that the U.S. organization which originally set the record in 2006 had officially set a new record with 238,620 participants. Canada should be extremely proud of the unprecedented levels of participation, which strongly supported the importance of adults and children reading and learning together.

Congratulations to the following winners of the FLD World Record Attempt challenge:

  • Fort Nelson Community Literacy Society, Fort Nelson, BC – 570 participants
  • Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy, Revelstoke, BC – 520 participants
  • Edmonton YMCA, Edmonton, AB – 452 participants
  • Holy Rosary School, Regina, SK
  • Tricon Elementary, Bay de Verde, NL
  • James Morden Public School, Niagara Falls, ON

All participating schools and non-profit organizations had a chance to win one of six $1,000 cash donations. Three $1,000 awards were set aside for non-profit community groups with the highest number of participants, and three awards were given to the schools with the highest percentage of participation based on their school population. Nearly 20 schools across Canada had 100 per cent of their school population participate and three of those schools were chosen in a random draw as prize winners.

ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation would like to especially thank Family Literacy Day sponsor Honda Canada and Official FLD World Record Attempt Sponsor, Oxford Learning.
